We do celebrate Valentine’s day in France although it is not quite as popular as in England.
We go out for a meal or have a romantic evening at home with candles ( des bougies ) and a good bottle of wine ( une bonne bouteille de vin ).
If two people in love ( des amoureux ) are apart, they will send each other a card ( une carte ) by post ( par la poste ) or by Internet ( une carte virtuelle) to prove to one another that the saying: loin des yeux, loin du cœur is not true!
Giving flowers is of course very popular and you may see at florists’ ( les fleuristes ) another popular saying: Dites-le avec des fleurs!
