Read our French teacher Martine’s tribute to well loved student, Robin:
“All our regular blog readers will have been familiar with our famous Christmas sketches written every year by Robin.
When Robin started writing them around 2010, the sketches featured a dialogue between Le père Noël, John and le facteur, Robin. When our dear John died, Maureen took over as La mère Noël followed by Sarah. Robin would choose a topic in the news and cleverly included some aspect of the personality of each member of the French class in a very witty fashion. It was acted out in class just before Christmas and then the text was posted on the blog.
I am very sad to say that Robin passed away peacefully four weeks ago. He will be greatly missed not only by his fellow students but also by me, he was my student for over 20 years and had become a dear friend. He was lively, fun to be with, gentle and kind, had a passion for poetry, Apollinaire was a favourite poet of his, he loved Renoir films, enjoyed French songs, Linda Lemay featured highly on his list as well as les chants corses polyphoniques. He liked French crossword and anything related to playing with the language.”
Students who were in the same class have also wanted to share their memories of Robin:
Si on demandait à Robin sa profession avant de prendre sa retraite, il répondait toujours, souriant, « facteur » — son travail de retraité. En fait, c’était un professeur d’anglais très doué mais très modeste et très bien aimé. Il nous manque. Alan
Un homme doux et aimable, plein d’esprit, toujours content de partager sa passion pour les arts, surtout le théâtre et la littérature. Hilary
Pendant la vie on rencontre quelques personnes inoubliables qui ont des qualités exceptionnelles, et qui enrichissent notre expérience. Robin était comme ça.
Il aimait tant les gens, les idées, l’humour et la poésie.
De temps en temps il postait un poème dans la boîte aux lettres d’un voisin, par exemple après une naissance. Récemment il m’invitait à partager de la poésie chez lui et je n’oublierai jamais ces matins si agréables quand nous lisions ensemble.
Robin était là quand j’ai commencé dans la classe de Martine il y a quinze ans ou à peu près. Tout le monde l’adorait, un homme unique. Sarah
Surtout je me souviens de deux caractéristiques de Robin:
– Son sens de l’humour pendant les leçons et à Noel quand il était le facteur ‘Père Noël’ et il racontait gentiment les blagues concernant les autres membres du groupe.
– Son courage face à la maladie de Parkinson qui est, pour la plupart des gens, très dur à supporter. Gordon
